Who would think that outsourcing your critical thinking to a computer program would be career limiting?

As one New York financier told Financial Times journalist Gillian Tett, new hires who were seen as “AI natives” are turning out to have alarmingly shallow ideas. So much so, the anonymous finance worker admitted, that his firm now actively avoids seeking out AI-literate STEM graduates, and opts to comb through humanities students instead.

A difference between UK and European railways I've only just noticed: four tracked mainlines are the backbone of GBR infrastructure. Yet I can hardly think of any examples in western Europe. Two double tracked routes is always the preference!

One of these is preserved, heritage rolling stock, and the other is still used in front line passenger service. Both photos were taken around Greater Manchester today!

Classic PKP compartment stock behind a classic British-style AC loco to take me to my hotel in Krynica-Zdroj this evening.

My first time using the Plavec 🇸🇰 to Musyna 🇵🇱 border crossing today. This route sees two international trains per day on the weekend, and none Monday to Friday! Waiting room was nice and cool which was much needed in this heat.

Is there anything better than a Solari departure board?

Subjectively? Yes. Very much so.

Have you wondered if pollen is worse this year? Read more in our latest pollen forecast 👇 www.metoffice.gov.uk/blog/2026/po...

Šibenik 🇭🇷 is a beautiful little town on the Adriatic coast and is away from the usual backpackers beaten track.

Best article on railways I have read in a long time. Germany’s €100bn bid to make the trains run on time - www.ft.com/content/db75... via @FT

The view from my new flat in Leeds, can anyone tell which former railway is in view? (without checking the alt text!)

The irony of reading an article about the impact of AI on critical thinking skills, and being presented with the Time magazine built in AI assistant... is it supposed to help me read it? I'm capable of doing that myself, thanks.

THEN vs NOW: High Street with Queen’s College on the right. 📷 | Oxfordshire History Centre #ThrowbackThursday

Side-by-side comparison of Oxford’s High Street in around 1960 and in 2025, viewed looking towards the Church of St Mary the Virgin. The Queen’s College buildings line the right-hand side in both images. The historic photo shows vintage cars, red double-decker buses and lightly trafficked streets, while the modern image shows buses, parked cars, bicycles and busy pavements.

400 miles of diesel running under wires ✅ Crap paths and worsens service recovery for the rest of the WCML ✅ Further abstraction of revenue from the public purse ✅

Today I was on the inaugural Lumo service from Stirling to London Euston for the full 6 hours - quite a lot to unpack from that trip, but on the whole there’s not much for me to complain about considering I only paid £20 for the trip. Full review out soon on YouTube… 🫡

Peniche Fortress, where antifascists were imprisoned by Salazar's secret police during the Estado Novo. Always interesting to mix something like this into a beach/surfing holiday!

Second weekend in May means Moonlite in the Fox Inn, Corfe Castle, and some old trains of the Southern Region variety.

A nice mid-afternoon meander around Ribblehead, seeing as the Settle & Carlisle Railway is in fact on my doorstep.
