To act as if we still have time before making radical changes is in itself a form of climate denialism. Or perhaps we should call it collapse denialism. www.currentaffairs.org/news/the-mas...

Good answer. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/07/u...

We've spoken about capitalism versus socialism.
Do you want to talk about capitalism? Let's talk about capitalism. Are you recording? Capitalism is about leveraging the laws of supply and demand to efficiently allocate capital expenditure to maximize value. When capitalism works, it's because you have free entry and exit into markets. So if you believe in capitalism, you have to believe in government regulation to protect markets. In fact, right now, we have exactly the opposite. You don't have to be a socialist to believe that you should be taxing billionaires their wealth. In fact, if you are a capitalist, you should believe in that. So, I'm capitalist who just knows about capitalism. I have a bad habit of reading, I'm so sorry.

One thing I don't understand is how when a company knowingly (or negligently) sells an essential service to a fraudster, in direct interaction with the victim, they aren't themselves accessories to fraud? In the case of Meta we have proof they know; I'm sure Google too.

Google keeps finding ways to expose its users to fraud while lining its own pockets. That restaurant markup scam that caught me in 2023? Three years later, it's *way* worse. 46/

This is going to be a slow burn story that gets people more and more angry the more they hear about it. Some asshole billionaires are blowing holes in the Moon, a thing everyone loves.

This aligns with another thing I've been thinking about (but perhaps harder): in the EU, you can now have alternate app stores on your phone. What if we had on-protocol app stores? @trezy.codes covers a lot of the bits below, content moderation handles safety, social graph recommendations. Neat?

Here's the short version: - Creator uploads work somewhere - Creator makes a space that contains access to the work - User purchases the work thru a storefront - User is added to the space with access to the work - User copies work into their own space (e.g. their library)

The only sane tab behaviour is open to the right of current and close to immediate left. It means that open+close returns you to where you were and the only option that keeps large volume manageable. That it's not in common use shows how much cargo-culting goes into UI design.

@older.bsky.social avatarDoctora Malka Older@older.bsky.social

I'm trying floorp & for an inveterate tab-multiplier like me 2 problems keep sending me back to chrome: there's not "new tab to the right" function (that I've found), meaning new tabs send me off to casa del carajo; and the tab icons don't squinch into tinier & tinier forms as I add to them. recs?

My postdoc is coming to an end, so I'm looking for work! Let me know if you, or anyone you know, wants to hire a philosopher of biology/cognition with a knack for cross-disciplinary work, a focus on autonomy + agency, and experience writing for the broader public (10+ yrs in sci/tech journalism).
