RSApocalypse - will quantum computers really end cryptography as we know it?
35 min
If one had to pick what quantum computers are useful for based on their portrayal in popular culture, breaking ciphers would probably be one of the first choices. But can a powerful quantum computer leave all encryption defenseless, or is there a bit more nuance to this story? And when can we expect this cryptography apocalypse anyway? This talk will provide an introduction to the effects of quantum technologies on our current classical encryption methods. It'll cover how quantum computers can attack ciphers like RSA, what's still safe, how large of a computer we need anyway (including when can we expect them), and what's changed since we learned about the problem in the 90s - including this year's explosion of papers trying to hasten the inevitable and the current state of our postquantum defenses.
