It was an enlightening livrestream. One area I’m especially curious about is talking to content creators more directly. Mastodon has catastrophically failed on that front, and the rest of the market is basically made of silos meant to extract surplus from creators. Bluesky has a real card to play.

The reports that LLMs would lead to the death of human scientific editing have been greatly exaggerated.

@sameyler.bsky.social avatarSam Eyler-Driscoll 🍉🌻🍁@sameyler.bsky.social

It's been three years since ChatGPT put hundreds of my editor colleagues out of work and I would like to report that my firm is receiving increasing numbers of explicit requests from authors to guarantee their papers will be handled by a human and never touched by an AI editor.

A note app, running on Atproto Spaces. Fits nicely with my idea that Atproto can become a universal syncing backend, on top of being an open social media protocol.

@tasked.at avatar@tasked.at

🚀 Launching tasked.at, a notes and TODOs app in Atproto Spaces. All private. No server required. Self-hostable soon. ⚠️ Alpha version, adding a lot of stuff, there might be data loss but we will try not to when possible. You will need a spaces-alpha PDS account (for now: atproto.com/blog/atproto...)

In case there are @macstories.net readers who didn't know: Federico Viticci and John Voorhees decided to go back to Xitter. Even worse, they said nothing about this move to the team and to the readers. The entire team has quit. The move and the deception are both huge disappointments.

Commiserations/congrats? to the seven people no longer listed on the MacStories staff/contributors page, I guess? I hope you all find success in whatever comes next 💛 https://www.macstories.net/about/

This letter is a disgrace.

@rebeccasear.bsky.social avatarRebecca Sear@rebeccasear.bsky.social

Here’s the new letter defending Cofnas against “punishment for whistleblowing” (which is not why Ghent suspended him). This time around signatures from a disappointing number of academics from my old institution, London School of Economics johnarmstrongmaths.com/openletters/...

In my experience, LLMs are excellent to accelerate the implementation of a research project. They can also provide decent assistance to discuss the research question. But they often catastrophically fails on subtle but important details and nuances that could sink the entire project.

The Mask has aged very poorly, in large part due to the multiple non-consented kisses/gestures and inappropriate sexual comments directed at the character played by Cameron Diaz by The Mask – who is supposed to be the hero/antihero of the movie. That was straight up gross to rewatch.

Bluesky network2d ago

Discussing whether some groups of humans are better than others is not “viewpoint diversity” and has no place in any university or research institution.

Bluesky network2d ago

It's a tangential point, but maybe there is a world where not writing 10 papers a year or something becomes a credible and positively received signal that you don't extensively use AI to write your papers.

@eugenevinitsky.bsky.social avatarEugene Vinitsky 🍒@eugenevinitsky.bsky.social

Lets assume a year or two from now arxiv / conferences have 10x the paper submissions they currently have. This isn't implausible; it is now trivial to generate true but trivial things. What's the appropriate solution?

Optimist: the cup is half full. Pessimist: the cup is half empty. Economist in the audience when the speaker is still at slide 1: I don’t believe in the empirical strategy you use to measure the emptiness of the cup.

Microsoft Copilot is probably the most useless LLM chatbot offered by a Big Tech company. Its replies are virtually useless, mine can't access Outlook data for some reason, and the app straight up crashes in both Safari and Chrome, rendering the whole thing unusable. What a disaster.

Bluesky network4d ago

One interesting use case for Atproto Spaces is as a universal app syncing backend. Concrete consequences: - Devs don’t need to build a custom cloud backend. - No need to rely on a third-party, often US-based. - Syncing can happen between platforms and OSes seamlessly. - Apps can share data!

Many such cases these days, and not just in economics.

For me, the most unconvincing thing about Acemoğlu is that he seems to keep prioritizing X for his social media comments

Great app to interact with Atproto on iOS with Shortcuts.

Currently working on a paper that uses bibliometric data. OpenAlex is so, so much more pleasant and easier to work with than Web of Science. It's night and day.

First time I'm playing with permissioned Atproto data. Left: the post I published on @secretsky.at, only visible to mutuals. Right: the Bluesky profile, visible to anyone, doesn't show the Secretsky post — as it should.
