Is there any chance we could all just be a bit more Dolly?

@scottygb.bsky.social avatarScott Bryan@scottygb.bsky.social

Dolly Parton on trans rights. God I loved her.

When looking at the issue of anti-trans legislation, Parton said that “I try to get into the human element of it.” Pointing out that she has people in her life who identify as queer and trans, the 77-year-old star said it was important to hear what they’re saying.

“I know and love them all, and I do not judge. And I just see how broken-hearted they get over certain things and I know how real they are,” she said. “I know how important this is to them. That’s who they are. They cannot help that any more than I can help being Dolly Parton, you know, the way people know me. If there’s something to be judged, that is God’s business. But we are all God’s children and how we are is who we are.”

As I was reading the sad news about Dolly Parton’s death we had a power cut. Everything went dark and quiet, appropriately.

Sometimes. Often. Tonight. Julia Fordham's album Porcelain is the perfect evening listen. That voice. Those arrangements. And Towerblock almost always makes me cry. Like now.

I missed #totp last night because I was watching an insanely creative parade of dahlia-clad floats take over a village. I would have offered my witty and pithy observations on the Corso Sint Jansklooster but my Dutch isn't up to it.

Goedemorgen

A sign in a Dutch field.

Translated: Look at the silence of this beautiful area,
where beauty slumbers beneath the
bustle of our thoughts
and the noises of the matter of
the earth and man.

Be still and listen and know how to find the beauty
and the silence again
in yourself and in the other.

in jou en in de ander.

I think this is the closest I'll ever get to Pirate Radio.

"Possibly as a memorial", but also possibly as a sick joke.

An information board at Kasteel de Haar near Utrecht reads "Following Baron Hélin van Zuylen's death in a car accident in 1912, the garden was redesigned in the form of a wheel with eight spokes, possibly as a memorial. At its centre, a well was created. The embankments on the east and west sides were removed, along with the steps and pathways."

This is a good read.

We’re on holiday. For one awful moment I thought there was only The Big Light. It’s ok. Lamps have been located.

If only someone had tried to warn us.

A message posted on Facebook by Torfaen Council reads: "ROAD CLOSED
Llanover Road is closed.
The keepers pond is being used to refill the helicopter and there are some people attempting to swim. Please do not swim or use Keepers Pond today while operations are going.
Thank you"

My FB is full of politicians wanging on about the Welsh Language phone alerts. Bet you can't guess which Parties.

They knew.

For decades climate scientists have said that continuing to burn fossil fuels would lead to both more wildfires and that they would be increasingly severe.

Yet politicians - many of whom are still in public office on large taxpayer salaries- dismissed, scorned and ignored these warnings.

Every bit of new coverage of these fires should be framed as the direct result climate change and political failings. Those who profited by underplaying the danger should be challenged for their complicity in every interview.

Especially those charlatans who, even now, still claim to be on the side of farmers and the poorest in our society - despite enabling a crisis that will hit those groups hardest.

This is horrendous. In Cardiff. Proud, multicultural Cardiff.

An unprovoked daylight attack on a young Muslim woman in Cardiff, in which she had her hijab torn off, has raised concerns about the increasing impact of far-right Islamophobic rhetoric ✍️ Martin Shipton
