Standardisation of Black Carbon aerosol metrics for air quality and climate modelling (stanBC)

Jun 2023 - Present

Black carbon (BC) is an air pollutant that contributes to climate forcing, reduced crop yields and impacts on our health. Produced by incomplete combustion of transport and other fossil fuels, air quality networks have been set-up to monitor its mass concentration and legally binding procedures are in place to identify and treat emission sources. Networks measure equivalent Black Carbon (eBC) mass concentrations in real time with light absorption photometers, but traceability is incomplete, uncertainties are poorly understood, and robust documentary standards are lacking. This project will address these needs and via input into normative standards aims to generate greater reliability for measurements of this important air pollutant.

Improved vehicle exhaust quantification by portable emission measurement systems metrology (MetroPEMS)

metropems.ptb.de

Aug 2020 - Aug 2023

The project will develop new standards and calibration procedures for the three key components of a PEMS system: determination of NOx concentrations, number of particulates (PN) and exhaust mass flow. Based on these new measurements an improved PEMS instrument will be developed and validated along with traceable methods to extend performance for NO2 concentrations below 10 μmol/mol and up to 2500 μmol/mol. The work is expected to support the comparability of air quality measures across the EU and help manufacturers conform to current and future legislation.

Metrology for light absorption by atmospheric aerosols

empirblackcarbon.com/

Jan 2018 - Jun 2021

The measurement of particles in air characterised as black carbon is important both for their role in climate change and as a measure of combustion products associated with health effects. Measurements are made very widely, and compact, precise, real-time, relatively inexpensive instruments are available. Although it is conceptually a simple measure of the light absorbing properties of airborne particles, the metric does not currently have SI traceability, with consequences for the comparability and interpretation of data. The project will provide a workable solution to this major problem, with widespread benefits across the worlds of both climate change and air quality.

Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO)

attoproject.org/

Mar 2013 - Dec 2017

The German-Brazilian joint project was launched in 2009 and is since coordinated on the Brazilian side by INPA and on the German side by the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry; since 2017, the German part of project is coordinated by the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry. The tower and its surrounding facilities/plots aim at delivering groundbreaking findings which will be the basis for improved climate models and increase our understanding of the ecosystem's functioning. With a height of 325 meters the tower extends above the ground-level boundary layer, which will provide local as well as regional information from the world´s largest tropical forest area.
