«The very property we are building open networks to achieve, that no single actor can control the network, is also the property that makes this emergent object of legitimisation [of violence] impossible to target.» We builders have a responsibility to internalize this. Networks = conduits of power.
turns out, when elon musk posts "imprison the government," it doesn't matter much. but thousands of accounts repeating each other does so if permission for violence was never really coming from the owner, what happens on a network that has no owner at all? connectedplaces.online/the-permissi...
Important work here. It genuinely frightens me how rarely AI is properly contextualized in the domineering growth paradigm it grew out from and exists in service of. It’ll stay that way until we extricate it from the old paradigm by popular uprising, forking the tech into democratic co-ownership.
1/7 Proud to share our paper, accepted as an oral at ICML '26! We highlight how Big Tech’s influence on AI R&D drives damaging outcomes, and what we as researchers can do about it. We also discuss underlying economic causes. See link for paper, and below for a brief summary arxiv.org/abs/2512.03077
@mariaa.bsky.social @eugenevinitsky.bsky.social could lea just be ported over to @mu.social ? 90% of the neat stuff in lea is useful to everyone, including the general parts of verification, which mu / @eurosky.social are also operationalizing as a protocol-commons. github.com/eugenevinits...
That said, we know people want more safety tools, so @eugenevinitsky.bsky.social and I are building them! Here's what that looks like in our client. My post got a lot of interactions and then a big account reposted it, so alerts showed up and I have tools to deal with it. Give us more ideas!
@me.webbeef.org can Beaver-browser be the app that bundles this together? tangled.org/me.webbeef.o... We’ve now also got @blackskyweb.xyz and @mu.social as actively maintained alt-clients with explicit remits of network resilience.
Did the introduction of group chats silently set everyone’s default messaging settings to ‘allow DMs from no one’? Pretty sure I had mine set to open. Trying to invite some folks I’m already in DMs with now to a group chat, but most of them are clearly set to accept messages from no one.
where are the “technology is apolitical” mfers at??
*posting from mu* new client who dis? oh wait I have you all in my contacts, nvm. heckin love me some social graph integrity.
finding utility and even some joy in the use of LLMs whilst also hoping (better yet, scheming) for all the anti-democratic frontier labs to crash and burn, taking the fascist corpostate down with them, is, in fact, a perfectly tenable position.
