Work-life balance hasn't been great lately (even after factoring in studying... plus it's been "summer") - need to sort that out... but was great to explore Portsmouth today, and gravitate towards the sea after enjoying the sculptures ☺️ Sandwich Terns the 'best' bird noted #PublicTransport.

  • Looking down towards the sea from a mound beside Southsea Castle. The castle has a white and black lighthouse. It is overcast
  • Artwork at Southsea, near Southsea Castle. Each of the 5 painting is colourful and abstract using lots of different lines to show the sea. By Stephanie Morgan. #Art
  • Close up of HMS Warrior. It has no sails and is painted black with a red stripe at the bottom.

*grumbles* This is partly poor Public Health and the terrible attitude to infection control that's drummed in from school... We shouldn't still normalise infecting each other with unknown pathogens (as we don't test most infectious people - "colds" & "coughs" could be many things 😐)

Worried about taking a sick day? What that says about you

That time of year again: @webs-gsmp.bsky.social by bus! Unsurprisingly for September, Port Solent (Portsmouth Harbour) was quiet with a grand total of 27 Black-headed, 3 Common & 1 Herring Gulls 😅 #LowCarbonBirding

  • Window view from the bus showing the top of the harbour on the opposite side of the road.
  • Paulsgrove Lake with shipbuilding yard and Portchester Castle in the distance
  • Marina with lots of white boats. Behind is exposed chalk from a quarry on Portsdown Hill. It is sunny with some white clouds. A few houses can be seen around the marina
  • Amy is wearing olive trousers and sat on a blue and pink patterned seat. In the gap is a grey and red hiking rucksack with a tripod strapped to it n the side pocket. The tripod is slightly taller than the bag. It is missing a head (packed inside bag). The tripod is held in place with an extra strap attached to the load-bearing strap used to lift bags. The frame is made of trampoline mesh. It has some tape to repair holes. The bus is mainly grey but has a photo with grass

Soggy start to a week off with a wander over to Browndown - much needed and very welcome after a mostly too hot summer! Not much seen yet asides from Sandwich Terns offshore. Hopefully some birdy days to come 🤞 #LowCarbonBirding

  • Shingle beach with lots of MOD signs warning of DANGER and potential for explosives. One sign says not to enter if the red flag is flying - thankfully it wasn't today. Another sign warns of high wildfire risk. In the distance is lots of horse scrub. It is overcast and wet.

Traveller's-joy was one of many species that distracted me on today's walk, and 100th species for @bsbibotany.bsky.social #100PlantsChallenge 🎉 Finished just before term restarts for masters yr2! #WildflowerHour Enjoyed trying to ID local plants - lots more to get my head round some day.

  • White flowers with many very thin petals growing beside chicken wire
  • Same species but this time gone over and looks more like its other name of "old man's beard"

Asides from missing an Osprey (d'oh) it's been nice wandering around the seafront and must be a Flying Ant or something kind of day! Also an obliging Clouded Yellow at Elmore Triangle + many vocal Sandwich Terns offshore. #LowCarbonBirding

  • Mix of grey and white clouds. There are flats and a row of street lights, and some trees, plus one massive house. Above are lots of gulls that appear to be fly catching
  • Looking towards Fawley oil refinery from Lee-on-the Solent. There is a slope with gorse and vegetated shingle below. Some breakwaters are visible with tall markers. In the distance the tall funnels from the refinery are visible on the left, and Hill Head and Brownwich / Chilling farmland on the right, with Southampton Water just visible and a cruise ship in it if you squint! It is overcast
  • Orangey-yellow butterfly with a white circle. It is partially obscured by a small branch and sat on a green leaf

Hill Head: trickle of Yellow Wagtails, Meadow Pipits & hirundines overhead + single Tree Pipit call heard. Also small flock of Terns, 2 Eider offshore, and brief check of boardwalk on reserve yielded Blackcaps & Willow Warblers. Ooh, and this boat... #LowCarbonBirding #PWC2026

  • Wonky photo that looks like the Isle of Wight is sinking or very sloped to the east. In front of it is a black and white steam boat with red funnels. There is a small white sailing boat. It is sunny with clear skies
Posted: Geez, the research summarised in Traffication is insane! 😨 Thought I'd already opened my eyes to roads/cars impacts but... wow. Population …Bluesky network
