Gordon’s Alive!

Flash Gordon

It suddenly occurs that the weatherman on #r4today just now sounds a little like Count Binface doing his day job. Just something about the accent, maybe.

I’ve recently been writing a couple of chapters for academic publications. The referencing often serves only to destroy what you’re trying to convey just at the moment (MacGuffin 1998) where it matters most.

The Harvard system is an abomination (Saunders 2026). It's like space junk (Lucas 1978) clattering around the beautiful cosmos of one's prose.

There is a lot of #wingspan being played in this house at the moment. Seems to be the perfect balance between play preferences. 16 year old likes long, complex things (eg Scythe, Root). 14 yo likes fast turn based, social things (Quacks of Q, Exploding Kittens). Wingspan a really nice balance.

Wingspan, the awesome and best board game

This should be printed on cards and made available to every organisation in the world for the next two years.

As a dev, I agree what you describe should be automated. But why did it have to be an AI and not a regular script? What was the use case that an LLM solved?

I’m going to spend the day sharing this article as widely and as well as I can. What are we about to lose as a postliterate society? Too much to contemplate. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

We are allowed to make things up. The talk I gave at a high school this week, as part of their celebration evening, emphasising that the world is malleable and open for them to decide to make things up. smithery.com/2026/07/12/w...

No idea why the English press are trying to confect a row between Tuchel and Bellingham. Gabriel Clarke on ITV misquotes (Carelessly? Provocatively?) what Tuchel said love to Bellingham. The rest of the press now seem to like this as a story. #worldcup #ENGNOR www.theguardian.com/football/202...

Taking the youngest to see My Chemical Romance tonight. On other nights, the support acts were Idlewild, Skunk Anansie, and Echo and the Bunnymen. We, on the other hand, get Sunny Day Real Estate. Which feels like a really weird move for a UK audience.

Some photos from #Brighton earlier, playing with #OM5 vintage I filter for a 1976 heatwave vibe. #M43

Fascinating moment about to arrive on #r4today… they’re about to interview #countbinface. The haters say we’re not a serious country. Lads, being unserious is our entire national identity. Grab some popcorn, this is big-league unseriousness…

Zia Yusuf turns around - “Lads, I actually think that went rather wel…” He stops mid sentence, realising the team has left, no doubt burnish their CVs…. #r4today

“Labour, Tories, Lib Dems and Greens: I demand you stand down in Clacton. I will be a unity candidate and pledge to build at least one affordable house. Nigel Farage says he wants The People versus the Establishment. So be it. Leave him to me.” - Count Binface, 7th July 2026

Sorry, what?! Has Sam Beckett leapt in to Messi for this game or something? #ARGEGY #worldcup

From the soccer community on Reddit: Trump confirms that he called FIFA about Balogun’s red card: “[The referee] made a call that nobody could believe ... he's our best player, or one of our best play...

You realise FIFA will spend 24 hours trying to say nothing on this, only for the Orange one to pop up and say ‘yes, that was me, I asked them to cancel it’ to the next TV reporter who stands near him with a mic. #FIFA #WorldCup

Folarin Balogun has had his suspension for the World Cup round of 16 match against Belgium lifted. Article 27 of FIFA's disciplinary code allows them to suspend any suspension not related to match fixing. No explanation has been provided by FIFA as to why they chose to suspend Balogun's suspension.

I am including Stewart Brand’s shearing & pace layer diagrams in a chapter on Zenko Mapping I am writing for a book called ‘Service Design in Transition’. I needed a digital graphic version for print & have redrawn them as PDFs - you can download them here: smithery.com/2026/07/05/s... #pacelayers
