Go to your camera roll and search "boat" and then post a picture of a boat you like.

  • Photo: the back end of a small white motor cruiser, tied stern-first to a stone quay. On the transom, in black curly script, the font of wedding invitations and nail salons, is the boat's name: Octopussy. Now think about that. Somebody paid real money for this boat. Somebody sat at a kitchen table and said, honey, what do we call her? And they landed on a 1983 James Bond title, because nothing says responsible adult like naming your property after a joke a British studio snuck past the censors forty years ago. And boats are always "she." We gender the boat, then we name her that. Civilization, folks.
Details, for the people who actually need them: a black canvas roof over the cockpit. Three sliding glass doors, beige curtains drawn, and in the glass a faint reflection of the photographer, clearly delighted with himself. A padded beige bench across the stern. A wide swim platform just above the waterline. Two thin white lines cross in an X and hold a fat white fender ball with a navy cap, hanging over clear teal water so clean you can see seagrass on the bottom. Nautical term: fender. Civilian term: giant boat earring. A thick black rope is wrapped around a cleat on the left and coiled on the deck like a snake taking a nap.
Foreground: a worn, stained stone pier with a white rope lying across it. Behind the boat: more boats, sailboat masts, dark cypress trees, cream and salmon villas stacked up a green hillside, a bare gray limestone mountain, and a sky so blue it looks like it's trying to sell you a timeshare. A red flag with gold trim pokes up from the roof. Montenegro. Which means Adriatic. Which means beautiful. Which means expensive. Which means somebody's uncle owns it, and the uncle has a guy, and the guy has a cousin at the marina.
Final thought: nobody names a boat Octopussy by accident. That is a decision. That is a man who has waited his entire life to say it over the marine radio. This is Octopussy, requesting a berth. Over

guess OS by the picture #Linux

  • Hand-drawn black-and-white comic, three stacked panels numbered 1 to 3. Yes, I looked at all three. No, I am not happy about it.

Panel 1: a giant ring-shaped building seen from above, with little trees and a pond inside and more trees scattered outside. Numbers on the right: $5,000,000,000, cost. 12,000, people. Five BILLION dollars. For a donut. The pond is nice. I will give you the pond. Nothing else.

Panel 2: a skyline of five glass office towers standing on one line, every window drawn as a perfect grid. Of course it is a grid. Numbers: 83, buildings. 50,000+, people. Fifty thousand people, and STILL nobody can explain why an update needs three reboots and a prayer.

Panel 3: ONE stick figure standing next to ONE desk. On the desk: one monitor with a few lines of code and a blinking cursor, and one bent desk lamp. On the floor: a router with two antennas, a couple of random boxes, and a giant knot of cables pouring out from under the desk that no human being will ever untangle. Numbers: 1, person. 500/500, supercomputers. ∞, cables.

Now look at panel 3 again. Slowly. Because apparently that is hard.

That one desk runs every single machine on the TOP500 list. All of them. Five hundred out of five hundred. The donut runs a cafeteria. The glass towers run a license server.

And somebody wants to "fix" panel 3 by adding a campus? No. WE DO NOT ADD BUILDINGS. The whole point of panel 3 is that it does not need them. If your idea makes the headquarters bigger, your idea is wrong, and the fact that you thought otherwise worries me more than the idea itself.

And do NOT touch the cables. Yes, they look terrible. They are not technical debt, they are load-bearing. The last person who tried cable management there now maintains a printer driver.

Friedrichstraße #berlin

  • A red emergency box is bolted to a stainless-steel pillar in a German train station. The sign says “Out of Order” and “Außer Betrieb.wo lights glow green and red, because even a broken machine needs to keep management informed. It doesn’t work, but it has bilingual failure. That’s international cooperation.

Look at the setting: steel, glass, clean lines, architecture announcing that humanity has mastered the future. Then, right in the middle of all that confidence, a red plastic rectangle says, “Nope.” We can build trains that cross countries and buildings that look like expensive spreadsheets, but a box on a pole has called in sick indefinitely.

The pictogram is the best part: a tiny person bent over a mound, apparently shoveling, repairing, burying, or regretting something. Is he fixing the machine? Digging its grave? Warning us about trusting technology? The sign refuses to clarify. It gives you a silhouette and leaves you alone with your imagination, which is how public services work anyway.

And those lights! Green says life, red says stop. Together they announce: “Something is happening, but don’t expect it to help you.” The machine may be broken, but the indicators are doing a terrific job of indicating. Somewhere, a report will proudly note that the status lights remain operational. A committee will call that progress.

Imagine the paperwork. A technician files a report. A supervisor acknowledges it. Someone orders a part. The part arrives at the wrong depot. A meeting is scheduled to discuss the delay. Meanwhile, this red box sits here like a tiny monument to the human achievement of turning a simple failure into a process.

At least it’s honest. No cheerful slogan. No customer survey. No promise that your feedback matters. Just OUT OF ORDER, in German and English, glowing b

If this isn’t progress, it’s certainly got excellent lighting. Sadly.

We pet Graf Cat

  • Screenshot of a GitLab merge request, Changes tab, one file: src/lib/images/mascot/graph-hero-home.webp. An image diff, old version on one side, new version on the other. Both show Graf, our cartoon cat: orange and white fur, black outline, blue collar, a light blue blob behind him, a grid of blue dots, navy diagonal stripes, two sparkles and an upward arrow. The new one has clean edges. The old one had edges your eyes forgave out of politeness. File size dropped from about 194 KB to about 174 KB, so the cat got sharper AND lighter. Every "AI-powered" landing page that ships a 4 MB stock photo of a handshake can sit quietly and think about that. Around the diff: the MR title (higher-quality hero mascot image), the branch feat/home-hero-hq-image, the pipeline badge and a Changes counter that says 1. One. A single file. No red and green wall of code, no "refactor everything" commit, no 47 comments debating a variable name. Just a cat. Number of bugs introduced: zero. Number of meetings required: also zero. Number of people who will notice without zooming in: honestly, almost none, which is why we are zooming in for you in the next two images. Yes, we opened a merge request for a cat. Yes, it passed review. Yes, we are going to do this again the second the cat gets another whisker. We shipped a better cat and wrote a changelog about it. Reviewer verdict, in full: approved, would pet again. Priorities: still correct. Fine print, since someone has to read it: the file is a transparent WebP, 1600 pixels wide, re-cropped from a 5775 pixel original, with the blob and dots recolored back to the original palette so the homepage does not suddenly look like a different brand. We were asked to make the cat better, not different. Both words matter. Graf is the mascot of GraphTracks, a Bluesky analytics tool, and he is now officially the best-rendered thing in our entire stack, including the database.
  • 4x zoom, hard pixel edges, side by side: the chest and collar of Graf, our mascot cat. Red banner on the left says BEFORE, green banner on the right says AFTER. Both halves show the same cat parts: a thick black outline sweeping diagonally across the top, a blue collar inside it (royal blue on the left, a slightly duller steel blue on the right, with a lighter blue patch at the far edge), a pale grey-blue triangle of shadow on the chest, a big patch of white fur, a strip of orange-tan fur on the right, and a short black stroke for the front leg at the bottom right. BEFORE: the outline is built out of tiny stair steps. The collar edge wobbles. The chest line zigzags like it was drawn on a bus hitting potholes. This is what a lot of "good enough" artwork looks like when you stop politely not looking at it. AFTER: smooth, even, confident lines. The collar curves like it knows it is on a homepage. The chest flows down in one clean sweep. Same cat, same colors, same smug expression, minus the staircase. Yes, we zoomed in 400 percent on a cat's chest to prove a point. Yes, this is the highest-resolution chest on Bluesky. No, you did not ask for this. You are welcome anyway. Competitors compress their logos into oblivion and call it performance. We sent the cat to the gym and took his measurements. Rendering quality that you can only see at 4x is still rendering quality, and we will happily die on this very small, very smooth hill. Screenshot taken at the exact spot where the staircase died. Extra detail for everyone who reads alt text properly, which makes you the real MVP: the collar is the only saturated blue in the whole crop, the white of the chest is pure white, the shadow triangle sits exactly under the collar on the left, and the black leg stroke at the bottom right now has a rounded top instead of a chopped one. Graf has not commented on any of this. He is a cat. He is above pixels. He is, however, above everything else on our homepage.
  • 4x zoom, hard pixel edges, side by side: the left ear and top of the head of Graf, our mascot cat. Red banner on the left reads BEFORE, green banner on the right reads AFTER. Both halves show the same scene: a thick black outline curving over the ear, warm brown inside the ear, orange-tan fur below it, a short black stroke across the ear like a tiny eyebrow, a light periwinkle blob behind, some white space, and a few rounded blue squares from the dot pattern in the top-left corner. BEFORE: the outline is lumpy and crumbly. Edges are stair-stepped, the curve of the ear trembles like it was traced during an earthquake, and the little stroke inside the ear ends in a ragged, frayed stub that nobody should have shipped. AFTER: one smooth black line, an ear that curves in a single clean arc, properly rounded corners, and a stroke that finishes with a neat round cap instead of a crime scene. Same ear, same brown, same cat, only more pixels and none of the shame. At normal size you cannot tell the difference. At 400 percent you cannot stop telling the difference. That is the entire pitch. Other analytics tools hide behind "it looks fine on a retina display". We zoomed in to 400 percent and fixed it anyway, because we are the kind of people who read the fine print of cat ears. The staircase effect was killed on purpose and with enthusiasm. Please pet Graf. He earned it. We already did. Extra detail for the people who actually read alt text, respect: the blue squares in the top left are the corner of the dot grid, the periwinkle is the same flat color in both halves, the brown inside the ear is identical, and the only thing that moved is the edge quality. The ear did not get bigger, cuter or more engaged. It simply stopped looking like it was assembled from LEGO. Graf has watched us do this and approved with total silence.
