The Mystery of the Golden Cylinder

It is the year 1014 on the isle of Rúinrua, an island province in the far west of the Érean Hegemonia. Several travelers are staying the night in a tavern in the town of Ol-Siar, on the western coast of the island. These travelers are you, intrepid heroes! You are relaxing after a long day, drinking ale and eating seashrub stew when you all notice some commotion by the bar of the small tavern. Other than you, only three people are in the ground floor of the tavern. One is the inkeeper and the others are two figures in deep blue cloaks talking excitedly to each other. One of the figures is a Dwarf, the other is an Infernis. They begin to shout in a language you do not understand and the innkeeper walks close to quiet them. They seem to be debating about a small item the Dwarf holds in his hands. Suddenly, the Infernis casts a subtle spell directed at the item. In an instant, a golden flash of light bursts from the object towards the Infernis and he explodes into a rough mist of blood and viscera. The approaching inkeeper is caught by the light and part of his face is shorn off by the burst. Likewise, the Dwarf who was holding the item has his hands and forearms cut cleanly off. The Dwarf and the Inkeeper fall dead in the puddles of gore splattering the floor of the room. As the Dwarf falls, the party feels engaged by a force emanating from the center of the carnage. The shining golden object that the Dwarf was holding, somehow clean despite the sudden violence nudges free of the Dwarf's body and levitates slightly above him, rotating slowly. What do you do?
