Senior Editor and Journalist

Buying Guide Editor, Tom's Guide at Future

London, England, United Kingdom🇬🇧
Report

I love helping people out, and it's what I enjoy the most about my career as a digital editor and journalist. As Buying Guide Editor at Tom's Guide, I oversee the team's buying advice, turning reviews into recommendations that'll make people's lives easier. Before that, I spent my time as Fitness Editor at Fit&Well and Tom's Guide finding ways to make exercise approachable and accessible to everyone.

I'm well-versed in producing stories for the digital age, having spent more than half a decade as a freelance technology journalist and editor with bylines at MakeUseOf, Happiness, Live Science and Lifewire. Whether I'm writing for people using search, social or direct sharing, I take time to understand the audience and make sure that they can find what they're looking for.

Buying Guide Editor, Tom's Guide

Future

Jan 2025 - Present

I manage the end-to-end editorial and business process for all published buying guides on Tom's Guide (600+). To make sure we're offering the best and most up-to-date buying advice to our readers, I developed and implemented internal mechanisms for timely updates to each guide, and advise the site's editorial teams on how best to approach new products and reviews. This also includes making prioritisation decisions; which guides to focus on and how much resource to dedicate to buying guides over other editorial work. I collaborate with other teams in the business to make judgement calls on workloads and the business value — and opportunity cost — of each guide. I offer data-backed insights based on analysis of ecommerce and editorial performance using internal tools, revenue reports, and commercial data, alongside analysis of Google rankings and page analytics from Parse.ly, Marfeel, Google Analytics and Looker. Tom's Guide holds a prominent position within Future, so this work also intersects with the wider business. I have led multi-department projects, initiated cross-team analysis sessions and have worked closely with the company's Audience Development Mangers and eCommerce team to translate business expectations and data into actionable insights for the editorial team.

Fitness Editor, Tom's Guide

Future

Jan 2024 - Jan 2025

As Fitness Editor, I led a team of four geographically diverse fitness, health, and technology writers, holding regular development meetings, managing output, and developing each member’s dedicated beat. I'd write up to five features each week, edit all Fitness team output, and collaborate on Tom’s Guide’s news production, refining headlines, story angles, and editing up to 15 news stories per day, while managing the fitness vertical's budget to commission freelance writers to produce news and evergreen content (new and updates) in line with Fitness-specific style guide for improving accessibility, consistency, and accuracy. It was also my responsibility to help plan and execute content packages around key events or product launches (Galaxy Unpacked, Apple event, Google I/O) including coordinating our in-person attendance, capturing original imagery, and writing and editing accurate, clear, reader-first stories. The foundation of all this work was data-backed, so that me and the team could prioritise effectively. To reach this point, I'd analyse editorial performance using Google Analytics, Looker Studio reports, and key article search rankings, and assess e-commerce results and develop optimisations to deliver budgeted revenue.

Fitness Editor — Fit&Well

Future

Jan 2023 - Aug 2023

As Fit&Well's primary editor, I planned new evergreen content optimised for Google search and Discover and ensured that this aligned with the brand's strategy, demonstrating Experience, Expertise, Authority, and Trustworthiness (EEAT). The majority of published content during this time was commission from a network of authoritative freelance journalists, writers and reviewers. I was responsible for allocation of the site's monthly budget, and would commission, edit and manage the end-to-end workflow up to publication for each story. I was responsible for editing submitted content to maintain site’s voice and accessible tone, ensuring high editorial standards, accuracy, and use of clear language, and I developed a Style Guide and clear commission guidelines to make sure that we published consistently high-quality health and fitness advice for our readers. Additionally, I curated a weekly email newsletter, with the latest stories themed around a topic and designed based on historical performance data to increase click through rate (CTR).

Staff Writer — Fit&Well

Future

Aug 2021 - Jan 2023

As a Staff Writer at Fit&Well, I published over 350 stories on fitness, exercise, home workouts, meditation and technology. Some were short-form news posts, others were researched evergreen stories aligned with EEAT standards. In mid-2022, I wrote an opinion story about my daily morning walk which became the site's top-performing article, with over 1 million visitors. I played a critical role in helping the newly-launched site develop into a destination for accessible fitness and wellbeing advice for U.S. and U.K. readers. Across a three-month period, I overhauled the site's top-performing buying guides, including writing, commissioning, and editing SEO-focused updates and associated reviews in line with Future's content strategy. I covered high-priority e-commerce events, including Black Friday and Amazon Prime Day, producing reader-focused deals posts and buying advice.

Buyer's Guide Editor

MUO

Feb 2018 - Aug 2021

As MakeUseOf's Buyer's Guide Editor, I had overall responsibility for the site's buying guides, including more than 400 published articles. I was responsible for maintaining scheduled output, story generation, SEO optimisation, and regular updates. As a team of freelancer writers and editors, I developed relationships with freelance writers, reviewers and journalists to generate new ideas, improve coverage, and provide feedback on written submissions pre-publication. I attended and covered major consumer technology events, including CES and IFA.

Social Media Coordinator

MUO

Apr 2017 - Aug 2021

I worked with the site's Social Media Editor to establish priorities and was I was responsible for content creation and interaction on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to an audience of over 600,000.

Freelance Writer

Freelance

Feb 2016 - Aug 2021

Across half a decade, my work in technology services journalism as a freelance journalist led to over 300 published stories across international sites like MakeUseOf, Lifewire, Family Handyman, and Blocks Decoded (a now defunct publication about cryptocurrency and blockchain). In some cases, I had a long-standing relationship with editors at these sites, who would approach me with story ideas but many of the articles I published in this time were pitched to specific editors, sections or sites. I developed these relationships by understanding the needs of the site, the topics they covered, and any house styles, to ensure that the story wasn't a chore to edit and would resonate with the site's audience. I used my skills to also write product reviews for several sites, including MakeUseOf. I joined the publication's reviews team, and would submit 1,000-1,500-word written reviews, alongside video editions to be published on MakeUseOf's YouTube channel and embedded in stories. As this was a remote, freelance position, I worked on these on my own, writing scripts, recording B-Roll and presenting 10-minute segments to the camera. I became comfortable on camera as a presenter and reviewer and gained valuable self-taught videography and photography skills.

Security & Technology Explained Writer

MUO

Feb 2016 - Feb 2018

I held a regular freelance position as a writer for MakeUseOf's Security and Technology Explained verticals, helping simplify complex topics for a general consumer audience, with actionable advice and clear explanations of technical processes. As part of this relationship, I committed to eight new articles and explainers per month, accepting researched ideas from editors and pitching my own original ideas.

Section Manager

John Lewis & Partners

Oct 2010 - Jun 2012

After successfully completing the City & Guilds accredited Section Manager program, I was promoted to the weekend manager of the Electrical & Kitchenware department. I was responsible for a team of 30, seven direct reports, resolution of customer issues, achievement of departmental KPIs and sales targets.

Quality Engineer

Apollo Fire Detectors

Sep 2010 - Jul 2011

The main priority in this role was to resolve any quality issues in a timely manner, either pre or post-shipment. This included problems with components, including material deformations, labelling, faulty electronics or out of specification parts. I monitored factory yield to assess line failures, and collaborated with the production engineers to resolve temporary manufacturing troubles or implement process improvements. Most issues were not isolated to a single team or area of the business, so I developed reports and analysis to present to the senior leadership team, especially when there were potential safety problems. Although this was a one-year placement as part of my degree, I was trusted and treated like a regular part of the team by my manager and the wider business. I spoke directly to customers and end users, helping to resolve technical issues, even going directly to installation sites to troubleshoot. As part of this role, I leaned and implemented Statistical Process Controls, and worked within lean manufacturing standards. My analysis of returns and commercial data directly led to the company offering a lifetime warranty on its smoke detectors and alarms.
