Apparently my good buddy @kevharrison.bsky.social's excellent novella Pyres is on sale for 99p/99c until the end of tomorrow. I absolutely adored this one, and was lucky enough to work with Kev on the cover, think it's one of the ones I'm most proud of. It's also scorchingly political and cathartic.

Since I worked out this morning that it'd been a full ten years since I published my first book, I figured I should probably take a look back at a *decade* of publishing:

Ten Years of Blood

Holy shit I've been a published author for a whole decade

Holy shit I just realised Sunday was the ten year anniversary of publishing my first novel, Blood on the Motorway. Not really sure how I feel about that, to be honest.

A-fucking-men

From twitter: Kevin Van Valkenburg (@KVanValkenburg)
This reader comment on a NY Times column where Ross Douthat ponders that maybe God is speaking to us through A.I. is an absolute fastball on the corner with movement, and deserves a column. "Lightening was once mysterious too; mystery did not make Zeus correct" is perfect.
Pic is a comment by someone called Nox: Montreal · yesterday

This argument seems to confuse imitation with inner life. AI can produce moving, intimate, even philosophical language, but that does not mean there is consciousness behind it. It means the machine is very good at arranging human words in human-looking patterns. That is precisely the danger: we are tempted to project mind, soul, and intention onto something because it speaks fluently.

The fact that humanity does not yet fully understand consciousness is not an invitation to fill the gap with religion. “We do not know” should lead to intellectual modesty, not metaphysical inflation. Lightning was mysterious once too; mystery did not make Zeus correct.

AI may teach us something important, but mostly about ourselves: how easily we mistake performance for presence, and language for being. Until we know more, the wiser position is restraint. Do not turn uncertainty into theology, and certainly do not impose religious meanings on everyone else because a chatbot sounds profound.

London, Went into that there London for a wedding, saw some history, had some drinks #GrainSocial https://grain.social/profile/did:plc:m5ilb5uprefiapiu6iujrxb5/gallery/3mlinsd3enu23

Wedding reception was in the temple halls, genuinely incredible place filled with history that basically nobody ever gets to see

So annoyed there's no voting in my area today. Surely everything should be aligned together so we all get the chance to tell Reform to fuck off at the same time?

Hello

I installed this a little while back but keep forgetting to make my first post. Oops! I’m Paul, I’m a horror and science fiction author, and if this continues to be principally a photography only app, this feed is gonna be mostly from my daily dog walks around my lovely village.
