I Walked with a Zombie
Jacques Tourneur
"it isn't considered polite to quarrel before ladies" okay then let her have a go first smh anyway this film is definitely "of its time", with stereotyping iof vodou, but it's an interesting abstract film which doesn't have every character be demeaning to the poc cast members

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

This review may contain spoilers. Some aspects of this are much more solid than the first film, like the vfx budget is definitely UP (the difference in the flame effects on the clothes is WILD), but while I do think this does a good job of building up a sense of questioning of what's going on, why, fleshing out the fascist empire, it also feels a bit less personal a story than the first. Not majorly, but I think a lot of the strongest emotional beats were from the aftermath of the first film's biggest beats (like the speech to district 11). Still has some great emotional beats and new things explored, I just think this story struggles a little between prioritising the smaller stakes of Katniss' personal sorta love triangle and the higher stakes of her being a symbol of rebellion, where the first film felt more focused on its story, but neglected to address the Capitol as well as this one does.
