Report

Very strong technologist, architect, thinker, researcher, tester and tinkerer.

An ideal early stage CTO or technical co-founder who is able to build systems from scratch, install and administer both small and large scale platforms.

Pragmatic architect who can design systems on a budget that are able to scale when needed.

Always watching new technologies/trends and figuring out ways in which they can be used to enhance the current business.

Distinguished Engineer - Data

Flutter UK & Ireland

Leeds, United Kingdom

Sep 2022 - Sep 2025

Following a merger, continued in the Distinguished Data Engineer role as part of the newly formed, geographically distributed UK & Ireland Data Tribe, serving as a member of the Data leadership team. My focus transitioned from finalizing the GCP migration to contributing to the strategic migration of data from the recently established GCP platform to the long-standing Paddy Power / Betfair Data Platform on AWS, driven by a wider business consolidation program. Key Responsibilities & Achievements: - Played a crucial role in the final stages of the groundbreaking GCP data platform migration, ensuring a smooth handover and knowledge transfer. - Supported Leeds engineering teams transitioning to AWS by developing comprehensive guides and documentation, streamlining technical onboarding and enhancing productivity, acting as a team multiplier. - Leveraged key learnings from the successful CDH to GCP migration, particularly the "Data Service" concept and tooling. Designed architectural patterns to integrate these principles into the existing AWS platform, aiming to address bottlenecks associated with monolithic repositories and enhance development cadence. These designs were crafted for seamless co-existence with existing development and deployment workflows, ensuring minimal disruption. - Proactively exploring and championing the integration of cutting-edge Generative AI (GenAI), Agentic AI, and Large Language Models (LLMs) within the Data Warehousing domain. - Developed numerous Proof of Concepts (PoCs) to demonstrate the potential of these technologies for a modern Data Platform, in anticipation of post-consolidation opportunities. - Hands-on experimentation with local LLMs (LMStudio, Ollama), DuckDB WASM for in-browser analytics, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) frameworks. - Providing thought leadership on the strategic application of AI technologies to enhance data platform capabilities and drive future innovation.

Distinguished Engineer - Data Tribe

Sky Betting & Gaming

Leeds, England, United Kingdom

Dec 2019 - Sep 2022

Spearheaded the groundbreaking migration of Sky Betting and Gaming's core data platform from a legacy Cloudera CDH environment to a state-of-the-art, greenfield data warehouse on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This transformative initiative set the foundation for the future of data within the organization and was significantly ahead of its time. Key Responsibilities & Achievements: - Played a pivotal role from the project's inception, participating in initial strategic meetings with Google through to in-depth technical deep dives with Google Professional Services. - Led the architectural design for the innovative "Data Service" concept and its associated tooling. This modular, configuration-driven framework, which transpiled to Terraform, significantly reduced cognitive load for data engineers, enabling them to rapidly develop and deploy self-contained data pipelines. - Designed a new Feature Store leveraging BigQuery, dramatically reducing feature generation times from 3 hours to just 15 minutes, thereby accelerating data science workflows. - Acted as a key technical consultant and subject matter expert for internal engineering squads and third-party teams throughout the complex migration process. This involved leading technical design reviews, mentoring engineers, establishing best practice guidelines, and providing direct problem-solving for intricate migration challenges. - The new GCP platform delivered substantial improvements, including a marked reduction in system incidents and significantly enhanced query response times for data analysts. - Contributed to the design of an ingestion service bridging Kafka to Pub/Sub, utilizing Dataflow for transformations before landing data into BigQuery.

Principal Data Engineer - Data Science

Sky Betting & Gaming

Leeds, United Kingdom

Oct 2016 - Dec 2019

Transitioned from Contractor to Permanent with a view to introducing better engineering principals in the Data Science team. The main brief for this role was to to put tools and processes in place to enable the Data Scientists to deliver models to the business faster. * Custom Jupyter Notebook Docker image to aid local off-line development and proof of concept of PySpark applications. * pytest backed PySpark framework to allow Data Scientists to build applications in a test driven manner. * Built Jenkins CI pipelines integrated with Stash to facilitate automated test and release processes. * RStudio Docker image built with connectivity to the main production cluster, allowing Data Scientists to develop models against live data with SparkR. Deployed on the production Rancher cluster. * Neo4j Docker image with Impala integration allowing users to analyse data using the graph database. * Neo4j Docker image to provide a custom Data Dictionary, providing a graph database of table, pipeline, model, and Jenkins relationships. * Deploying models and research produced by Data Scientists. Essentially applying good engineering practice to code from Data Scientists to allow it to run at scale in a cluster. Update 05/2018: It seems this role is what some people would call a Machine Learning Engineer

Hadoop Developer/Consultant (Contract)

Sky Betting & Gaming

Aug 2013 - Sep 2016

Contracted to help across the board with a green field project to migrate away from an existing Oracle Data Warehouse which was unable to scale up to the demands of the business without incurring considerable expense. The initial phase of the project was highly exploratory, building reference pipelines to ingest data from several Informix source. After three years the ETL processes are orchestrated by an in-house Ruby based DSL language that meets all the needs of the problems encountered when building the early reference pipelines. The business successfully turned off the old Oracle Data Warehouse in March 2016. * Liabilities simulation. Implemented a Monte Carlo simulation in Hive to predict liabilities for all unsettled bets in the business. * Data design for many of the foundation tables in the cluster. * PySpark implementation for cleaning up telephone numbers. http://engineering.skybettingandgaming.com/2016/03/30/pyspark-phone-numbers/ * Data design and optimisation of Impala based queries, taking full advantage of columnar storage in Parquet files. * Proof of Concept Data Dictionary and Data Lineage application using the Neo4j graph database. * Advising across the full stack, from hardware and configuration all the way through to Data Visualisation. * Strong hands-on experience with all of the follow technologies : Hive, Hbase, MapReduce, YARN, Sqoop, Impala, Parquet, Spark, PySpark, Cloudera, Informix, Oracle, Jenkins, Ruby, Neo4j.

UK mobile phone users are typically charged 10p–20p per minute for calls to “freephone” numbers. My colleague and I developed a simple two-stage dialling service allowing users to utilize their free contract minutes to call via landline access numbers. 0800Buster.co.uk has been used by hundreds of thousands of people to make tens of millions of minutes worth of calls, generating significant profit for the company as well as acquiring customers, links, and mindshare for the main Localphone.com site.
