Gap Year Fellow @ Hack Club: I design programs that get teens to ship real software!

Report

I design programs at Hack Club, with a goal to get teenagers to build and ship real software. We call these YSWS ("You Ship, We Ship"), where I've focused on short, themed challenges with a reward on the other end: i.e. ship a project built on randomness and we ship you a custom dice set (Entropy); compose a track in Sonic Pi and it lands on a Bandcamp album (Tape to Tape).Designing one means doing both the incentive design (which is easy) and the infrastructure (harder). For a smaller one, this involves: Astro sites on Cloudflare Pages, GitHub App repo provisioning, Fillout and Vercel APIs, DNS automation, custom review tools, etc.The through-line I try to keep is making computing more fun, and more human. I care about local-first software (CRDTs, data sovereignty, offline-first), mesh networking, and permacomputing, and I volunteer on Folk Computer's projected-AR system. Right now I'm building Lamplight, a note-taking app that squishes Realtalk-style rules together with Datalog (more to come soon!)I keep an open "lab" notebook at arcades.agency/log and /blog On leave from Cornell College (CS & German Studies) for the 2026–27 fellowship year, future education pending.

As a sysadmin for the Cornell College CS Department, I've managed a large legacy cluster of proxmox systems, and built out an entirely new proxmox cluster, as well as built new documentation and tooling so that my successors at this position will have an easier time understanding. I revamped the entire SOPs from a long Google Doc into a useful MediaWiki, with associated scripts and tooling to make new user creation and other things much easier.

I made a zork-inspired 3D point and click game, based off the aesthetics of games like Myst in about 2 weeks! This was for a class, and I used a one-person agile board (a bit overkill) to practice for industry.

An optimizing Brainfuck compiler, built as an exercise to learn OCaml.

Dialect is well, just that! It's a JS-like language that compiles to continuation-passing style JS, and can be made into a format suitable for web apps.
